This circular walk starts in the village of Güéjar Sierra. It is 12.4km long, has an elevation of 289m and takes approximately 4 hours to complete.
We start the route in the middle of the village and walk up to the barrio alto, past the Lavadero de las Eras Bajas and the Fuente de los 16 caños. From here, we follow the track el Sendero de la Gitana down to the Balsa de la Solana. We then follow the acequia along to the Molino del Coto. For most of the route, we follow the acequia but when we come to a farm with animals and here we have to circle round the top part to rejoin the track later. We continue on down to the Molino and across the bridge. We then leave the track and walk down to the Río Maitena along the Cuesta de la Viña. After a while, we come to one of the old tram stations and we then follow the tram rails to the tip of the Canales Reservoir. There is then a steep hike back up to the starting point.
This is a great walk but it does have a couple of complications. There are some areas of walkways along the aceqia where the water is in a large tube. On one section about 3 metres has deteriorated and you have to walk along the tube itself. At the time of writing you have to walk along a piece of metal concrete grid reinforcement (the type used in construction) with square holes of about 12cm. This is OK for humans but dogs don't like it. Our dog was sensible enough to run around the hill and find an alternative route. The other dog managed to cross on a lead. They will probably fix this after someone has an accident. Just make sure it is not you.
There is a great eating point which has a waypoint named as "cruza el rio". When there is not a lot of water in the river you can easilly follow our track and go directly across the river. If you can't cross the river then you might have to go back to the road and cross the river using the road. If you do that there ought to be an easy track to bring you back to the track marked on out map but it appear to be overgrown. You might have to get round using some narrow goat tracks if the river is in full flood.
One more hint: When you get to the cow farm don't go up the asphalt track on the left. You have to go on the left of the cow sheds. Just be attive to the gpx track after the cows.
