Verea de Enmedio

Spanish

Description

The Verea de Enmedio through the Sacromonte is one the most pleasant walks in Granada. The wonderful view of the Alhambra and down to the cathedral is ever present. A large percentage of the houses in the Sacromonte are caves. Just below this walkway is the camino de Sacromonte where there are many caves devoted to flamenco performances. At the time of writing there is a tiny bar that serves beers and tapas. There is a also a bench where you can comtemplate the view. There are not so many tourists in this area.

What is the meaning of Verea de Enmedio?

A "verea" or "vereda" is a "Narrow road, commonly formed by the traffic of pedestrians and cattle".

Enmedio means "in the middle" So the whole name means "lane in the middle".

In the photo you can see 3 plants.

The 2 cactus type plants are very common in the Sacromonte. The plant with the round leaves is a prickly pear. It can survive in hot conditions in poor soil. At certain times of the year it produces a fruit which appears at the tip of the leaves. In Spanish they are called "higos chumbos". The are very spiny and even picking one up for a couple of seconds will result in many tiny spines being embedded in your hand. For this reason to harvest them you must wear rubber gloves. It is not very common nowadays but years ago it was very common for the gypsy women to pick the prickly pear fruits and sell them around Granada. They would keep them in a bucket and when you bought some they would cut the skin off with a sharp knife.
