It is a curious rock formation that has become the emblem of the municipality of Beas de Granada.
In Cerro del Fraile is this natural formation caused by the erosion of the wind that has been sculpting the rock until it gives it this shape. Legend has it that “during the time when the Catholic Monarchs were fighting to reconquer Granada, an old Arab merchant, rich and owner of large estates and a castle in Beas, decided to flee the region, building this rock structure to hide in inside it a great treasure, so that it would serve as a sign to his descendants the day they returned to recover it.”
There is a legend about a statue located at the entrance to the town. In the time of the Catholic Monarchs, a rich merchant built a statue to hide his fortune, before leaving to fight. To confuse thieves, he built another one just like the first one. Both became known as “El Fraile” and “La Fraila”. This has been a highly coveted and sought-after treasure for thousands of years, to the point that it caused the collapse of “La Fraila”. Today only one statue remains and the great fortune has not yet been discovered.
