The Canal de los Franceses (French canal) is located just outside the village of Dudar which is about 13km from the centre of Granada
The Canal de los Franceses was created during the years of the "gold rush", and served to carry water from the Aguas Blancas river to the mining operations of Cerro del Sol. It was necesary to wash the rocks with a large amount of water. A strong water stream was created with an artificial waterfall of 117 metres to separate the gold from the rocks.
The French constructed a water channel of 16 km in order to get the water from the river Aguas Blancas. The remains of this water channel including a aqueduct are still visible in Dudar. The French channel is nowaday still used for providing water to the city of Granada.
The aqueduct crosses the the Barranco de Fiñana there is a cave which you can go into on the other side
The water canal was supported by 11 masonry pillars with a base of 3×3 meters and 10 meters apart. Only the pillars remain and they are called "Las Torres".
