Description

If you search on google for Guajar Fondón  El Castillejo most of the results find very dry academic descriptions of the castle.  Apart from a few pieces of pottery, little is know about the history of the castle except that it as inhabited by the Almohads at some time in the 12th and 13th centuries. It would have been interesting to have seen what the castle looked like when it was inhabited.

The Almohads were a Berber Muslim religious movement founded in the 12th century in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Founded by Ibn Tumart, the Almohads sought to unify the Maghreb region and to spread their strict interpretation of Islam across North Africa and Muslim Iberia. So maybe similar to the Taliban. The Almohads were eventually replaced by the Marinid dynasty in 1269. The meaning of Almohads is “those who affirm the unity of God”.  They rejected anthropomorphic theology and preferred the idea of the absolute unity of God.  This means that rather than thinking of God as a an old man with a beard in the clouds they believed God was a kind of pure spirit.

The Almohad dynasty, which lasted from the 12th to the 13th century, was a major force in the history of the Muslim world. One of their most lasting legacies was their military architecture, which was designed to protect their empire from external threats. Almohad fortifications utilized a combination of tall walls, towers, and bastions to form a defensive perimeter around the places  they controlled. These walls were often built with large stone blocks and covered with a thick layer of plaster and whitewash to make them easier to spot from a distance. Inside the walls, the Almohads constructed a network of towers, gates, and courtyards to further strengthen their defenses.

It is difficult to know exactly what the Almohads were defending and why they built this castle. Maybe from an Moorish point of view the abundance of water, nearby agricultural land and the general pleasantness of the valley was an influence.
