Running of the Bulls in La Peza Spain

Description

This happens in mid October every year:

This is the running of the bulls in La Peza 2016. It is not a massive occasion like in Pamplona, here there are only about 6 bulls. It is necessary for them to get from the edge of the village to the bull ring which is in the main square of the village. Every year in mid October they put up seating around the Plaza Major and turn it into a bull ring. At the end of the process the square is covered in sand and a metal enclosure is erected for the bulls.

The bulls spend most of their life on a large farm about 9km from La Peza. The farm is surrounded by massive fencing. They use the same barriers as you find on motorways but three barriers high. Fighting Bulls aren't usually very aggressive in their daily life. They have to be made angry at the start of the bullfight before they will continually charge the matador.

This is only a short bull run and it is not very dangerous in comparison to Pamplona. As far as I know nobody has been killed at this bull run. After the bulls arrive at the bull ring the bull runners can play with the bulls in the ring.

I was told that a few years ago one of the people taunting the bulls in the ring lost a testicle when the bull caught him in the groin by the horns. The testicle was lying on the sand but it was later trampled by the bull and it was not possible for the doctors to reattach it. In the bread shop in the village there is a very good photo of a bull who had jumped over the barrier and had tried to get into the crowd.

The bullfight is quite expensive to put on. The expenses are covered by selling tickets to the bullfights. Also, almost everyone in the village pays a fixed price, this will cover admission to the bullfight and several kilos of bull meat. The bull meat is called "carne de lidia". You sometimes see this available at Spanish restaurants.

One of the most curious things about the delivering of the bulls to the bullring is that the bulls are accompanied by enormous cows with horns. After the bulls are in the bullring the cows return to their home on foot. Nobody accompanies them, they know where their farm is and they just walk home. Note: I have made this video because it is an interesting spectacle. Personally I do not like bullfighting and I do not condone or enjoy watching animals suffering.
