History:
The Tranvía de Granada a Sierra Nevada was a narrow gauge railway line in the province of Granada (Spain), which was operational between 1925 and 1974. Work began in 1921 with the intention of connecting the Vistillas area, in Granada, to the El Charcón area and from here to Sierra Nevada. The layout followed the course of the Genil River to Maitena, running parallel to the road from Granada to Sierra Nevada to the town of Pinos Genil, crossing fourteen tunnels and twenty bridges. In February 1925, the first section between Granada and Güéjar Sierra was inaugurated, extending to Maitena in 1927. Due to economic difficulties and political ups and downs in Spain, it was not until 1944 that the section between Maitena and Barranco de San Juan was completed. Finally, it was be closed in 1974 The route, with a total of 24 kilometres, was partially flooded after the construction of the Canales reservoir.
