The route explores the hills and the trenches around Alfaguara in the Sierra de Huétor. The walk is 9.8km long and take about 3 hours to complete.
The walk starts at the Estanco Alfagura or the Cortijo Pulgar. We make our way round the Cerro de los Corralillos and on to the Hospital de Tuberculosos - a hospital built by a wealthy German woman, Berta Wilhelmi, following the death of her brother who fell ill with tuberculosis, and the Casa del Cura. We continue round to the first set of trenches, Trincheras del Cerro de la Encina, on the hill of the same name, at 1480m and then on to second set of trenches, Trincheras del Llano del Fraile. There is then a gentle descent followed by a steep uphill section to the third set of trenches, Trincheras de la Yedra. The steep section lasts about 20 minutes. We make our way back to the starting point with a slight detour to visit the Botanical Garden or Arborethum, and the Cueva de los Pajareros. There are two points on the walk where the track is difficult to find and we've marked these with a waypoint and ¡Cuidado! (=Be careful!).
