Spanish

This moderate, circular route is 4.59km long. It starts in Plaza Nueva and finishes in Plaza Bib-Rambla. It begins at 696m, rises to 771m and then drops to 689m. It explores some of the important monuments in the Albaicín area and the centre of Granada.

LONG DESCRIPTION

The walk starts in Plaza Nueva. We walk past the Royal Chancillery, the Church of San Gil y Santa Ana, the Bañuelo (the old Arab baths), the Convento de Zafra and the Church of San Pedro and San Pablo. We then come to the Casa de las Chirimías (at the start of Paseo de los Tristes) with the Hotel Reúma on our right, on the other side of the river.

We walk through Paseo de los Tristes (or Paseo Padre Manjón) just below the Alhambra and then up the Cuesta Chapiz, past Palacio de los Córdova (an ornate palatial home and gardens built in the 16th century and now housing the Municipal Archive), Carmen de la Victoria (a 19th century carmen built on the site of a former convent and now belonging to the University of Granada), and the Escuela de Estudios árabes (also known as the Casas de Chapiz, two Moorish houses which were built in the 14th century).

We pass the Peso de Harina on our right, a small square with a statue of Chorrojumo, King of the Gypsies (1824-1906), which marks the start of the Camino Sacromonte. We continue up the Cuesta Chapiz to Plaza Aliatar, past the Salvador Church to Plaza Larga. We then go through Arco de las Pesas and on to Mirador San Nicolas. This viewpoint has fantastic views of the Alhambra and Sierra Nevada mountains. The recently built mosque is nearby. There are bars and restaurants serving tapas, meals and snacks. The simple 16th-century Mudejar church was built on the site of a mosque and was rebuilt following a fire in 1932 and the Spanish civil war. The large water cistern is one of 27 that still exist and which used to provide water for the neighbourhood and was in use until the 20th century.

We follow the road just below the Mirador on to Plaza San Miguel Bajo. There are bars and restaurants in the square serving tapas, meals and snacks. The San Miguel church dates back to 1501 and was built on the site of a former mosque.

We then make our way down through more of the typical Albaicín streets to the centre via Calle Caldereria Nueva, a street full of Moroccan teashops and souvenir shops.

We cross the Gran Vía and walk past Granada Cathedral, The cathedral was built on the site of a former mosque and was designed by a number of architects including Diego de Siloé and Alonso Cano. Building started in 1523. Since it took over 180 years to complete, it therefore includes a variety of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. The Royal Chapel is next to the cathedral.

From here we walk to our final destination and the end of the walk: Plaza Bib-Rambla. This square is in the centre of Granada. There are various stalls selling flowers and plants and others selling local produce. Around the edge are a number of bars and restaurants, serving tapas, meals and snacks.
