Legend has it that during the thaw period, a shepherd was with his flock next to the Laguna de las Yeguas. He was doing his chores when he heard a frightening voice, deep and gloomy, that seemed to cry out from his confinement. At the same time, another voice answered that it was not the time yet, since his wickedness was still very great. The good man could not flee, since the horror had paralyzed his body and legs.
It was then that he saw how two magicians approached the lagoon, intoning a strange psalmody, at the same time that they made mysterious, strange and supernatural signs. At that moment, they threw a net, and from the waters of the lagoon they took out a white mare of great beauty. They cast the net again for the second and third time, successively pulling out a blue and a black mare, after which deep disappointment came over their faces. They said that the red horse would make whoever possessed it invincible, but he was elusive and would not allow himself to be captured. They thought that they would have to wait until the next thaw, and they left.
Then a prolonged whistle was heard coming from the lagoon, and, straightening their ears, the mares galloped off, sinking back into the depth of its waters.
