Quentar reservoir

The quentar reservoir is located on the Granada to la Peza road.  This road would be a good destination for a car excursion. The water is turquoise and the reservoir is very picturesque. A good suggestion for an excursion would be  to take this road all the way to Guadix.  If you carry on after the reservoir there are some lovely picnic area by the side of the river.  There are large plantation of poplar trees by the side of the river which are particularly impressive in the autumn. 

The Quéntar dam was inaugurated on May 11, 1976.  The height of the wall just over 100 meters and it has a capacity of 13.5 million cubic meters.

The Quéntar reservoir supplies some of water  to the  city of Granada and also it is used for the irrigation. Together with the nearby  Canales Dam it contributes to the water supply of more than 300,000 inhabitants and meets the irrigation demands of some 10,000 ha. The tributary basin or catchment area  is 101.5 km².   The dam is of the double curved vault type with the following characteristics: height 133 m; crest length 200 m; excavation volume 175,000 m³; concrete volume 275,000 m³.

Technical data:
The spillway has an evacuation capacity of 600 m³/s and is equipped with two 4.75×10 m Tainter gates. pouring water on ski jump. The thickness of the dam varies from 19.40 m at its base to 3.50 m at its crest. It has two 1.30 m diameter drainage pipes closed by butterfly and Howell-Bunger valves. The dam is monitored with a complete installation for observing and recording its deformations, temperature and stress state, with pendulums, electroacoustic extensometers, both air and water thermometers, tensiometric capsules, fleximeters, clinometric bases and a measurement system. of displacements due to collimation at the crest of the dam.
